Alisa Nehls, MSN, CPNP, PMHNP-BC, is a member of Catalpa Health’s psychiatric team and serves clients in our Appleton, Oshkosh, and Waupaca clinics and at selected schools as needed. She treats any dimension in which medication, support, and education related to psychiatric illness would lead to improved function and quality of life for children, teens, and their families.
Alisa earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing degrees from Texas Women’s University in Dallas and started her nursing career in 2002. She began to focus on pediatric primary care in 2010.
As she partnered with families who had children with mental health and development concerns that greatly impacted the function of the child and their families, she realized that children’s mental health is a specialty that is tremendously under-served – sometimes leaving families without the care they desperately need for long periods of time. So, she enrolled at Maryville University in St. Louis to complete a Post-Masters Certification in Psychiatric Mental Health Advanced Practice Nursing, enabling her to focus on providing badly needed mental health care to the pediatric population.
Passionate about the opportunity for change that exists within each child, she believes there is no better way to improve the world than to make a difference for a child. She identifies and builds on the innate strengths of the child and their family while respecting each child or adolescent’s unique attributes in the setting of their development. She partners with families to address the mental health and wellness of the whole child in the context of their family and community.
Outside of work, Alisa loves hiking, biking, kayaking, and any other excuse to be active outdoors. And, as a member of a large Italian family, she loves feeding people. As she says, “I’m pretty sure it’s genetic: whether you’re a friend, neighbor, relative, or my kid’s friend, if you enter the house, you are having a meal!”
